TNR Now Challenges Claim that Beauchamp Recanted

by Stephan Tawney on August 7, 2007

And the story goes on. The Plank:

We’ve talked to military personnel directly involved in the events that Scott Thomas Beauchamp described, and they corroborated his account as detailed in our statement. When we called Army spokesman Major Steven F. Lamb and asked about an anonymously sourced allegation that Beauchamp had recanted his articles in a sworn statement, he told us, “I have no knowledge of that.” He added, “If someone is speaking anonymously [to The Weekly Standard], they are on their own.” When we pressed Lamb for details on the Army investigation, he told us, “We don’t go into the details of how we conduct our investigations.”

Now, as Allah points out, Fox News independently confirmed that the Department of Defense has concluded that Beauchamp’s allegations are false. The only question is whether Beauchamp has admitted that. Note how TNR says nothing about the fact that the articles they printed were completely false. They just claim he hasn’t admitted yet.

Of course, TNR doesn’t have the track record that allots them trust on these things. It’s already known that his stories were false – something the military verified quickly – and they printed them anyway.

Also note that, according to TNR, Lamb didn’t deny it. He just said “I have no knowledge of that.”. He also didn’t say the investigation hasn’t concluded. He said he wouldn’t talk about how investigations are executed.

Update: Allah updates by pointing out that TNR has yet to post that the military has found Beauchamp’s allegations are false. They posted that the investigation began, but has yet to post the findings of that DoD investigation.

Update: Dr. Rusty points out that TNR is quoting Major Steven F. Lamb, the same spokesman on record as calling Beauchamp a liar:

An investigation has been completed and the allegations made by PVT Beauchamp were found to be false.

Bob Owens has also responded:

The editors of The New Republic seem to be sticking to their story… just quite a bit less of it…

Just five days ago, TNR editors claimed far more support for Beauchamp’s stories, stating that they spoke to all sorts of experts—none that they would cite by name or position, but they assured us they were experts all the same—in addition to the soldiers they interviewed, and of course, Beauchamp.

They seem to have dropped their experts, Beauchamp, and claims of fact-checking before publication, all of which were murky at best, and deceitful at worst.

And even at that, they’re not denying he did it. They’re just saying no one’s told Lamb, if he has.

Not Quite The Last Word On ScottScam…

TNR’s editorial process is badly flawed, and in running this series, they not only got more than they bargained for, but besmirched the US Army based on the fabrications of a soldier who was provided an unfettered outlet for his fictionalized account….
