To His Credit, Sagar Apologizes

by Stephan Tawney on August 14, 2007

Yesterday, I posted on Ryan Sagar’s misreporting. He was out in Iowa to cover the Republican caucuses there for The New York Sun, and misreported part of the debate. He had claimed that Brownback said, “All for Jesus. All for Jesus. All for Jesus. All for Jesus.”, as if Brownback was, as Bryan put it, “a Christian cheerleader leading a chant”. In actuality, Brownback was quoting Mother Theresa whom he met when she visited Congress a few years back.

Today, to his credit, Ryan Sagar apologized – a foreign concept to most of the MSM. He’s referring to Byron of National Review, who pointed his mistakes out originally.

Having given it a bit more thought, I think Byron York is right. I should have been clear that Sam Brownback was quoting what Mother Teresa said to him when he said at the Iowa Straw Poll, “All for Jesus. All for Jesus. All for Jesus. All for Jesus.”

I always strive to give readers the clearest picture possible of events I cover, and I failed to do that here. I apologize for the sloppy writing and have corrected the sentence in the online article.

And, also, to clarify my defense of the sentence earlier, I certainly wasn’t saying that I opt for my own interpretation of events over accurately describing them. I simply made the judgment while writing the column — incorrectly, I now believe — that there was no difference between including the fact that it was a quote or not.

Below the fold, in the interest of adding as much transparency as possible here, I’ve included the YouTube video of the exact section of Mr. Brownback’s speech in question. (Thank you to HotAir.com for the pointer.)

I respect the fact that he brought his mistakes to the same place he originally made them. Perhaps the rest of the MSM could learn something from the newcomer.
