Marine to Sue Murtha

by Stephan Tawney

As well he should. Investigators have dropped charges against 3 out of 8 Marines charged, and Bryan points out that only one more is actually charged with crimes at the scene. The others are charged with crimes after-the-fact.

The investigation hadn’t actually started yet, but John Murtha had this to say on May 18, 2006, to Liberal windbag Chris Matthews.

If you can’t watch the video, here’s the transcript:

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Let me ask you Mr. Murtha to give us some details about that. Draw us a picture of what happened at Haditha.

REP. JOHN “JACK” MURTHA: Well, I’ll tell you exactly what happened. One Marine was killed and the Marines just said we’re going to take care – we don’t know who the enemy is, the pressure was too much on them, so they went into houses and they actually killed civilians. And, and –

MATTHEWS:—was this My Lai? Was this a case of – when you say cold blood Congressman, a lot of people think you’re basically saying you got some civilians sitting in a room around a field and they’re executed.

MURTHA: That’s exactly it.

Murtha, a powerful Democratic Congressman from Pennsylvania, actually accusing our Marines of murdering in cold blood. Now, all but one have been cleared of those charges. What does Murtha’s office have to say? Well, we don’t know. Bryan from Hot Air called them, but they hung up on him when he asked if they’d released a statement.

Anyway, back to the lawsuit. Colonel Jeffrey Chessani intends to sue Rep. Murtha for libel, once exonerated.

If Marine Col. Jeffrey Chessani is exonerated of the charges against him he may haul Pennsylvania Democratic Congressman John Murtha, into court, suing him for libel, one of his lawyers told NewsMax.com.

Brian Rooney, one of the attorneys at Michigan’s Thomas More Law Center representing Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani and a former Marine captain himself told NewsMax.com that his client, who is alleged to have failed to fully investigate the killing of 24 Iraqis in Haditha November, 2005 and not reporting an alleged Law of War violation, may follow the example of another Haditha Marine, SSgt. Frank Wuterich who is suing Murtha for libel.

Even The New York Times sees a pattern going here, and it’s likely the case against Wuterich will fall apart.

Now their final attempt to get a murder conviction is set to begin, with a military court hearing on Thursday for Staff Sgt. Frank D. Wuterich, the last marine still facing that charge. He is accused of killing 18 Iraqis, including several women and children, after the attack on his convoy.

If the legal problems that have thwarted the prosecutors in other cases are repeated this time, there is a possibility that no marine will be convicted for what happened in Haditha.

And the Democrats who had convicted them, remain tellingly silent.
