Mexican Trucks to Start Entering US
by Stephan Tawney
A disaster waiting to happen. We already know that jihadists have teamed up with Mexican drug runners to finance their operations. My guess is it wouldn’t be difficult to bribe some Mexican driver to put a mysterious box amongst his cargo. Stupid idea.
The Teamsters Union said it has been told by officials in the Transportation Department’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that the first Mexican trucks will be coming across the border on Saturday…
The Bush administration said last week it would start the cross-border program once the Transportation Department’s inspector general certifies safety and inspection plans…
Supporters of the plan say letting more Mexican trucks on U.S. highways will save American consumers hundreds of millions of dollars.
How many lives does it place at risk in return?
Previously, Mexican drivers had to make deliveries within 25 miles of the border. Now they can go much further in. The program is supposed to inspect these trucks. However it seems that may not always be the case.
California law enforcement officers will soon encounter Mexican trucks and commercial drivers throughout the state. Some of these trucks may not have been completely and thoroughly inspected at the USMexican border due to current in-place procedures. Law enforcement should be aware of this program and know what to expect when inspecting a Mexican truck and interviewing a Mexican commercial driver.

Methinks the Administration is moving in a gray area here. There is a difference in a safety inspection for a truck–brake lights, horn, tires, etc., that you get periodically–and a customs inspection of the truck’s cargo. So a truck that sails across the border without anyone looking inside can said to have been “inspected”, if a mechanic once certified it roadworthy. I think any public comment about this issue ought to nail down which of these we’re talking about.
I have to agree with the union here – bad idea.
