Roll Call reports that every private entity that Jack Murtha (D-PA) favored in his earmarks in the defense bill, recently donated political money to the Democratic Congressman. Roll Call is blocked except to subscribers, but we have the text courtesy of Glenn Reynolds.
Every private entity that Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) favored with an earmark in this year’s defense bill recently has given political money to the lawmaker, according to an analysis of House Appropriations and federal elections records by Roll Call and Taxpayers for Common Sense.
PACs and employees of those 26 groups together have contributed $413,250 to Murtha since the beginning of 2005. He collected nearly a quarter of the sum — $100,750 — in the two weeks leading up to March 16, the original deadline for lawmakers to file their earmark requests. . . .
Murtha’s record of receiving at least some campaign cash from every one of his private earmark beneficiaries makes him a rare, but not unique, case on the Defense Subcommittee. Rep. Norm Dicks (D-Wash.) also got some political money from each one of the private entities he helped to win federal dollars, the analysis found.
How’s that House cleaning effort going, Nancy? Keep in mind that this is the man that Madam Speaker supported for House Majority Leader.
Don Surber also reports:
You want to make the big bucks? Rent a congressman. Your return on your investment can be as high as $75 for every dollar invested.
Just ask the good folks at PMA Group, a lobbying firm. They sank $1,333,074 into the campaigns last year of 3 Democratic members of the House defense appropriations subcommittee and walked away with $100.5 million in defense earmarks for PMA clients, Roll Call reported.
That means for every buck they spent, their clients got back $75.39. In less than 1 year.
The 3 Democratic rent-to-own congressmen are John Murtha, Jim Moran and Peter Visclosky. These antiwar Democrats see nothing wrong with steering military money to PMA clients.
And why not? PMA money made up 20% of Murtha’s war chest, 18% of the Moran money and 33% of the Visclosky dough. For 2008, PMA already has steered $542,500 to the 3 amigos.
Money is not the only object. The firm was founded by Paul Magliochetti, who worked for Murtha on the defense appropriations subcommittee. Richard Kaelin went from being Visclosky’s chief of staff to lobbying for PMA.
Culture of Corruption.
