McCain really isn’t in a position to determine whose a “Conservative”, but he’s doing so anyway.
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Iowa – Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Friday renewed his call for a presidential line-item veto and criticized rival Rudy Giuliani for his part in a lawsuit that led the Supreme Court to deem the veto unconstitutional…
“I am deeply disappointed that Mayor Giuliani went to court to stop the president having a line-item veto so apparently he could preserve some of the projects for New York City,” McCain said. “You can’t be an economic conservative and in favor of fiscal discipline if you oppose the line-item veto.”
Giuliani sued in order to prevent Clinton from removing funding for his city by line-item vetoing part of a passed bill. Giuliani’s camp maintains that it intends to suggest a line-item veto amendment, but reminded the media that the act (line-item veto) has indeed been struck down as unconstitutional in the highest court. The majority was written by 6 justices, including Kennedy.
Again, though, John McCain, with a history of pushing amnesty and McCain-Feingold, really shouldn’t be determining who’s an economic and overall conservative.
