Democrats Turning on Armenian Genocide Resolution; Plus: Pelosi Wavering?

by Stephan Tawney on October 16, 2007

Watching Glenn Beck last night, he had the former Ambassador to Turkey on. The former Ambassador’s opinion? Passage of the resolution would be, to put it lightly, bad. According to Glenn, even a leader of the Armenian church in Turkey has come out against the resolution. A former Democratic supporter of the bill has, too. Now there’s this:

Key Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday joined Republicans to warn that a resolution calling the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turks genocide could harm U.S. strategic interests.

But despite the rebuff, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, did not back away from plans to hold a full House vote sometime this year…

Democrats, including Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a longtime member of Pelosi’s inner circle, urged her not to bring the proposal to the House floor and Republicans called the resolution another “irresponsible” foray into foreign policy.

Powerful Democrat Ike Skelton (Missouri) has also come out against the resolution.

Now, pay special attention to the second paragraph of the story I quoted: The part about Pelosi. Now we have this from ABC News’ The Blotter:

ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos Reports: According to Congressional and Bush administration sources, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is now unlikely to bring a resolution which would label the deaths of Armenians in a conflict more than 90 years ago as “genocide”…

At least seven House members have withdrawn as co-sponsors of the bill and several more are expected to follow. Key Pelosi ally Rep. John Murtha, D-Penn., is also lobbying against a vote.

Emphasis mine.
