DREAM Act Cloture Vote Blogging; Cloture Fails

by Stephan Tawney on October 24, 2007

UPDATE: The motion to proceed (cloture) has failed 52-44, short of the 2/3 required to proceed. For now, the DREAM Act has been defeated. I’ve no doubt it’ll be back.

Republicans voting with the open-borders lobby:

Larry Craig, Pete Dominici, Chuck Hagel, Orrin Hatch, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Richard B. Lugar, Mel Martinez, and Susan Collins. There may have been more, but those are definite right now. Stand by…

Dems Voting Against the DREAM Act:

Byron Dorgan, Claire McCaskill (Possibly more to come).

UPDATE: Vote happening now (12:27 PM).

Oy. Durbin’s on the floor now playing the “Think of the children!” card. He wants to know, and I’m paraphrasing, “Since when does America make kids pay for the sins of their parents?!”. I’m missing his point here. What does “making kids pay” have to do with this bill giving college tuition breaks and immunity to them?

Again, Democrats playing the emotion card, not the practical card.
