Congress Unpopular in California; Dems Turning on Pelosi

by Stephan Tawney on October 30, 2007

The first Democratic-controlled Congress in over 12 years isn’t just unpopular with the South or Mid-West. As a matter of fact, only 30% of Californians approve of Pelosi & Co.

For Pelosi, it was the first time the poll showed more people disapproving than approving of her performance – 40 percent to 35 percent, with 25 percent having no opinion.

Other polls since 2003 have shown larger numbers of voters with no opinion, but Pelosi always won more approval than disapproval. As recently as March, California Democrats approved of Pelosi by a 5-to-1 ratio, DiCamillo said. Now it’s less than 2-to-1. Nonpartisan voters also have soured on her.

Only 22 percent of voters approve of the job Congress is doing, the poll found, while 64 percent disapprove.

Eh, for the record (PDF), President Bush’s approval rating in California is…27%. That’d be 5% higher among Californians than Congress has…ouch.

Of course, Congress is down nationally, too. RealClearPolitics finds its average to be 24.7%. President Bush’s national approval? 34.2%. That’s a 9.5% difference, for those keeping score at home.

It’s a race to see who can get to zero faster, and Congress is winning. After 12 years in power, the Republican Congress only had 14% less approval than the Democratic Congress after 9 months in California. What. An. Accomplishment.
