Just as Pat Leahy (chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee) says he won’t support Mukasey for the Attorney General nomination, Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) are siding with Republicans in supporting the nomination.
WASHINGTON – Sens. Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein say they will vote for Attorney General-nominee Michael Mukasey, which likely gives him enough support to pass the Senate Judiciary Committee…
“This is an extremely difficult decision,” Schumer said in a statement, adding that Mukasey “is not my ideal choice.”
Why isn’t Leahy supporting Mukasey? Because the AG nominee refuses to say he’ll prohibit waterboarding until he knows further details. You know, folks, we wouldn’t want an al Qaeda suspect to be uncomfortable even if the practice saves innocent American lives.
By the way, Congress had the opportunity to outlaw waterboarding last year. It didn’t. Oh, and Congress still hasn’t.
So what’s this horrible stance Mukasey takes on waterboarding, that several Democrats won’t support him.
Mukasey has called waterboarding personally “repugnant,” but said he did not know enough about how it has been used to define it as torture. He also said he thought it would be irresponsible to discuss it since doing so could make interrogators and other government officials vulnerable to lawsuits.
Why isn’t that good enough for Congress? It apparently doesn’t understand actually understanding and researching something (the facts) before talking out their asses.
