gibbons British Teacher in Sudan Officially Charged

She’s been charged with insulting Islam and “inciting hatred”…for allowing kids to name a teddy bear “Muhammad”. I wrote yesterday about a 7-year-old coming to her defense, saying he chose the name (which he shares) and 20 of 23 students voted for it. I also expressed confusion as to how naming a teddy bear after Islam’s prophet is insulting, but not naming a chunk of the nation’s kids the same thing. Sudan apparently sees one.

Ministry spokesman, Ali al-Sadeq, said the case of a “teacher’s misconduct against the Islamic faith” should not have provoked a British government caution warning to its citizens in Sudan.

Al-Sadeq said this was particularly so after the school had apologized to the parents, pupils and to the Sudanese in general for the teacher’s “unacceptable conduct.”

Do the “parents” they apologized to understand that their kids voted to give the bear the name? Or is that just inconvenient truth for them?

Via Allah.

Update: I should’ve noted Gibbons faces 6 months in prison, 40 lashes or a fine. Welcome to Sharia, as Michelle says. Amnesty International, the organization perpetually fighting against Gitmo and the “Israeli occupation”, appears to be silent. Go figure.

Update: Ha! Michelle updates:

Wouldn’t it be great for people to start leaving teddy bears at the gate?

Yes!
