Giuliani Staffers Working for Free?

by Stephan Tawney on January 11, 2008

Earlier reports today sounded a bit sketchy, so I wanted to wait until the campaign had an actual release on this. Basically, the campaign is allowing top staffers to forgo their January paycheck to help save the campaign some money.

About a dozen senior campaign staffers for Rudy Giuliani are forgoing their January paychecks, a sign of possible money trouble for the Republican presidential candidate and last year’s national front-runner.

“We have enough money, but we could always use more money,” said Mike DuHaime, Giuliani’s campaign manager and one of those who now is working for free. “We want to make sure we have enough to win.”

So, is America’s Mayor broke in his presidential endeavors? No. As of December 31, 2007, the campaign has over $12 million cash on hand. Over $7 million of that total is set aside for the primary. DuHaime disputes the notion that they’re cash-strapped, pointing out that there are multiple fundraisers scheduled for this week in Florida.

As for the forgoing of pay, DuHaime says it was only limited to top staffers and was entirely voluntary. The idea was sparked when some members of the campaign volunteered to give up part of their paycheck, prompting the Giuliani campaign to ask others if they wanted to do so as well.

“I want to do everything I can to make sure Rudy’s president, and I speak for a lot of the campaign when I say that,” DuHaime said. “None of us joined this campaign for money.”

The Florida market is very expensive for advertising, especially for presidential races, according to the AP.
