Was Fred Always Vying for a VP Slot?
by AmerPundit | 12:58 am

After Carl Cameron reported that Fred Thompson had always been vying for a VP slot, there was some speculation as to the validity of the story. Cameron had apparently been hammering away at Fred since his friend had been hired by the campaign, then, having already left Fox, was fired just a few weeks later. Good reason for this story to be called a type of “hit piece” by Cameron?
JackM., a co-blogger at Ace of Spades, works in Washington and emailed Ace the following:
Absolutely true.
I heard about this as well, and was also sworn to secrecy, which is why I never jumped on the Fred! bandwagon despite his being the most conservative in the field.
It seemed dishonest to me to pimp a guy to your readers who I knew wasn’t really in it. But I couldn’t say anything…
So, I think you can take Cameron’s story to the bank. It seems to jibe with what I heard, although I didnt hear it at CPAC. I heard it [sometime before Thompson officially declared].
Sorry that I couldn’t break this on your blog, but people wouldn’t have bought it coming from me. All I can do is offer my experiences as an independent confirmation of what someone with credibility has already said.
The story has apparently been circulating in D.C. for a while, and JackM. (who is somewhat connected) apparently heard it from someone else besides bitter ex-employees of the Thompson campaign.

Another point and a question. If the rumors even trickled down to congressional staffers like Jack then surely Cameron wasn’t the only member of the media to hear of them. There’s no reason to think they colored FNC’s coverage any more than any other net’s (unless you buy the revenge-for-Mills theory). But in that case, why is today the first we’re hearing of this?
