Americans don’t elect Senators, we elect governors, as someone once said. Perhaps there’s a good reason: Look at our current crop of top candidates (Obama, Clinton, McCain).
The benefit of a Governor over a Senator? Executive experience and a history of (hopefully successful) management, which many Senators don’t have. Sen. George Voinovich (R-OH) pointed out McCain’s lack of management experience, despite his rhetoric of being a leader.
“McCain keeps saying, ‘we need a leader; I can hire managers,’ but we need a leader who understands management,” Voinovich said in a meeting with the Enquirer editorial board Monday afternoon.”
“There are big differences between being a mayor or a governor and being a legislator,” said Voinovich, a former Cleveland mayor and governor of Ohio. “We are facing some serious issues in this country. We need somebody who knows how to run things.”
Voinovich, who in the end voted against McCain’s amnesty for illegals, hasn’t endorsed anyone yet. He did, however, complement Mitt Romney’s experience as a manager and executive.
“The person in this race who has the most management experience in the private and public sectors is Mitt Romney,” said Voinovich.
Couldn’t agree more.
