Allahpundit and Ed Morrissey are liveblogging, with the big A issuing a prediction:
If you thought Hewitt’s praise of Romney’s religion speech was embarrassingly effusive, wait until this love bomb detonates over Nutrootsville. I’d ask you who you think is apt to embarrass himself with the most squeamishly lyrical praise — the competition is stiff, after all — but we all know who it’ll be so let’s just wait for him to deliver.
No matter what Obama says, most of the nutroots and his adamant supporters worshipers will use today’s speech to demand we all just stop talking about Wright now. After all, the Messiah has issued a few more platitudes and distractions, so why concentrate on the fact that Obama’s “uncle”, spiritual guidance counselor, former campaign member, and pastor for 20 years is a blame whitey, “damn America”, hate mongering conspiracy theorist?
The circus begins…well, it should’ve already, but no one tells the Messiah when to show up, damn it!
Watch Live on Fox News‘ Website.
Update: Drudge now has the expected speech in full. Here’s a part bothering me:
Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely – just as I’m sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed.
Senator, sure I disagree with some of what my priests say. But we’re not talking about a slight disagreement in political discourse here. We’re talking about a pastor who after 9/11 said from the pulpit that we deserved what we got. We’re talking about a pastor who blames the AIDS virus on America, even saying we created it to inflict on certain races. We’re talking about a pastor who preaches that we shouldn’t “bless” America, but damn it.
If my priest started preaching that, you can be assured I’d be looking for another church.
Update: Allah finds this bit:
“I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community.”
So, disowning a Black hate monger who blames AIDS on America and says we deserved 9/11…would be disowning the Black community? I’ve got a few Black friends, Republican and Democrat, who’d most likely disagree with that sentiment.
Update: Regardless, the speech is slick. It provides the latest round of notable quotables for the media to provide in the background while it gives an orgasmic review of the speech. In addition to what I said earlier, much of the media will also try to pass this Wright saga off as “case closed”, simply because Obama addressed it.
Update: Bordering on stupidity. From the speech, via Allah:
“to simply wish it away, to condemn it without understanding its roots, only serves to widen the chasm of misunderstanding that exists between the races.”
So to simply condemn the damning of America, the claim we deserved 9/11, the accusations that we’re all racists, and the conspiracy theory that we created AIDS to inflict on other races, would somehow widen the “chasm of misunderstanding”?
Seriously?
Update: Michelle Malkin links to this from ABC News.
More From Obama’s Pastor: U.S. a Racist Superpower
…”I think the caricature that’s been painted of him is not accurate,” Obama said Monday. “And so, part of what I’ll do tomorrow is just to talk a little bit about how some of these issues are perceived from within the black church community, for example, which I think views this very differently.”
Sen. Obama last week denounced two of Rev. Wright’s sermons blaming the 9/11 attacks on “U.S. terrorism” and calling on blacks to sing “God Damn American” instead of “God Bless America.”
But Obama defended Rev. Wright’s “social gospel” and said he agreed with some of his points, including issues relating to Africa.
Other sermons reviewed by ABC News, from videotapes sold by the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, reflect Rev. Wright’s repeated attacks on the U.S. government as a “racist and arrogant superpower” that does not value its black citizens.
In one sermon in October 2005, Rev. Wright addressed the racial elements at play in the wake of Hurricane Katrina….
Call Me Crazy: But is he actually equating the criticism of his racist pastor with racism itself?
Update: Excellent recap from a commenter at Hot Air:
Wright’s said some, er, disagreeable things. But it’s all the fault of mean old white folks!
Update: As Ace says:
Instead of asking us to understand Wright, CAN WRIGHT LEARN TO UNDERSTAND US? He’s the one with the f*cking problem.
Basically, I’ve learned that while Wright has said horrible, inexcusable things, it’s A) My fault for not understanding where he’s coming from, and B) Simple condemnation of the damning of America and blaming the white folk on AIDS would be just as bad as what Wright says.
Gee, can’t wait to get this guy into office.
Update: We’ve just learned that the entire Reagan Revolution was built on anger over affirmative action.
Furthermore, a minute ago was the first actual reaction from the crowd – good or otherwise. And Ed notes:
What a double standard — it’s OK for Wright to talk about the US of KKK-A, but if Ferraro talks about race, she’s done.
Update: And the Left’s (predicted) response begins. Here’s some, er, crying. At Kos, there’s more crying, leg tingling, etc. No surprise.
