McHenry Calls Contractor A “Two-Bit Security Guard”; Updated

by Stephan Tawney on April 4, 2008

The left blogosphere has gone ape over this video in which Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) talks about his experience in Iraq. He recalls a trip to the gym, where he was denied access by a guard due to a lack of security credentials. He proceeds to say he was annoyed due to the denial of entry by a “two-bit security guard”.

As I said in the beginning of the post, the lefty blogosphere has gone ape over his statement. Think Progress titles its post, “Rep. McHenry calls U.S. soldier in Iraq a ‘two-bit security guard.’”.

During a public appearance on Saturday, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) belittled a U.S. soldier in Iraq who was following orders and wouldn’t let McHenry go to the gym without the proper credentials. McHenry referred to the guard as a “two-bit security guard“:

Which would be interesting, except that McHenry never claimed the guard was a U.S. soldier. In fact, he wasn’t. Michael Goldfarb contacted McHenry’s office for a comment, and learned that the guard was actually a foreign contractor.

It was a poor choice of words to describe the foreign contractor, but anyone who was there knows that I delivered a speech praising the heroism and sacrifice of those who are serving our country in harm’s way.

Calling a foreign contractor a “two-bit security guard” isn’t exactly classy, but the left has the story wrong. They’re not exactly known to jump to the defense of contractors, having called them “mercenaries”. All of a sudden there’s an outrage over calling one a “two bit security guard”?

Update:Something should be added here. Here’s Kos himself after military contractors were killed in Iraq and their corpses hung from a bridge:

That said, I feel nothing over the death of merceneries. They aren’t in Iraq because of orders, or because they are there trying to help the people make Iraq a better place. They are there to wage war for profit. Screw them.

Now the left is going to be outraged over someone not having the utmost respect for a contractor?

Yes, it is classless to describe a person doing there job, no matter what that job is, as “two-bit…” What bothers me most about this video is not what he’s saying but how he’s saying it. His language is less about his story more about trying to impress with something that is less than a story than me talking about dryer lint.

“we had flak jackets and kevlar helmets.” “we were in and out of black hawk helicoptors.” Who cares? The uninformed and possible the upper elite will care because “he was in battle! my god i bet it was horrible! I bet this guy really knows his stuff!” What makes me think that is the way he described the guard who wouldn’t let him in, a very “down talking” or looking down his nose at him kind of way.

I’m just saying, he’s an idiot with or without that comment.
