That’s quite a jump from previous years, having reported a combined salary of ~$990,000 back in ‘06. The exposure as a presidential candidate probably hasn’t hurt, with sales for “Dreams From My Father” and “The Audacity of Hope” accounting for nearly $4 million.
Their salaried income was $260,735, which included his $157,102 salary as a U.S. senator and hers of $103,633 as vice president of community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
For part of 2007, Michelle Obama collected a salary for serving on the board of Westchester, Ill.-based TreeHouse Foods Inc., which produces pickles, nondairy powdered creamer and other products. She resigned in May after two years on the board.
The AP article notes that TreeHouse is a supplier to Wal-Mart — a corporation Obama has often criticized.
Flashback to February, where we found Michelle Obama claiming the following:
I have to say that my life now is not really that much different from many of yours. I wake up every morning wondering how on earth I am going to pull off that next minor miracle to get through the day. I know that everybody in this room is going through this. That is the dilemma women face today. Every woman that I know, regardless of race, education, income, background, political affiliation, is struggling to keep her head above water.
She’s just like you. You know, if you were raking in $4 million+ per year and your husband may be the next President of the United States.
