If his statements at last night’s debate are any indication, Barack Obama seems to believe that Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers are comparative. Here’s the transcript:
This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who’s a professor of English in Chicago, who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He’s not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis.
And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values, doesn’t make much sense, George.
The fact is, is that I’m also friendly with Tom Coburn, one of the most conservative Republicans in the United States Senate, who during his campaign once said that it might be appropriate to apply the death penalty to those who carried out abortions.
Do I need to apologize for Mr. Coburn’s statements? Because I certainly don’t agree with those either.
First of all, Obama downplays his connection to Ayers. The terrorist, who to this day believes he and his supporters should’ve carried out more bombings, is both a supporter of and donor to Obama. Obama met with him personally in 1995. The Washington Post also reports:
Both Obama and Ayers were members of the board of an anti-poverty group, the Woods Fund of Chicago, between 1999 and 2002.
So Obama has a bit more of a connection to Ayers than simply meeting him and living in the same neighborhood.
But back to the original point of the post.
Obama seems to have no problem comparing a fellow American Senator, an elected official who pursues peaceful reforms, to a terrorist who carried out bombings against multiple government targets. Michelle Malkin writes:
Is Obama really that marinated in moral equivalence that he gives no pause before likening a convicted terrorist who belonged to a violent radical organization responsible for dozens of bombings to one of the most respected members of the US Senate–a life-affirming, life-giving obstetrician who has personally delivered more than 4,000 babies?…
It’s a “distraction” from The Issues. Just another Washington “obsession” with Obama’s baffling thought process.
Yep.
