Hillary Gains Momentum in North Carolina

by Stephan Tawney on April 29, 2008

I left the last post off with a reference to Obama winning in Indiana. That may not be such a sure thing anymore.

This week we learned that Gov. Mike Easley, popular with blue-collar Democrats, is backing Hillary for the nomination. Easley is also a superdelegate whose move may prompt other one-the-fencers to make their own moves.

Now we find that Hillary, who has usually found herself down double-digits in North Carolina, is only down by 5%. With just days left until the primary, the Glacier is rapidly picking up steam in the Tar Heel State.

Key finding: “White voters are key. Since January, Clinton had led among Carolina whites by 14, 19, 17, 22 and 23 points. But today, suddenly: 31. In the Research Triangle, Clinton is up 9 points, week-on-week; Obama is down 3; a net swing of 12 points to Clinton.”

Ouch.
