Time Question’s McCain’s Age/Health

by Stephan Tawney on May 15, 2008

“Thomas Jefferson once said, ‘We should never judge a president by his age, only by his works.’ And ever since he told me that, I stopped worrying.“

-President Ronald Reagan

John McCain’s mother, at the ripe age of 97, can often be found campaigning alongside her son. McCain is capable of hiking the Grand Canyon, and has done so before. Yet, we can expect his age to become a recurring talking point by the left in this election.

We’ve already seen it brought up discreetly by Obama, remarking that McCain was “losing his bearings”. While the DNC assures us it won’t make his age an issue, it won’t have to if its surrogates do so for it.

The latest to bring up McCain’s age and health is Time, the same rag found declaring victory for Al-Sadr when he actually lost. Not only does it explore Mav’s history with cancer and the likeliness (40%) of it coming back, but the article points out how young Obama is. Maybe I’m just paranoid, but the article comes off as, “Just a reminder, the Republican is really old. But Obama? He’d be the ‘the fifth youngest President ever’. Just a helpful reminder from your friends at Time.”.

“I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”

-President Ronald Reagan
