Obama’s “Uncle” Liberated “Auschwitz”?

by Stephan Tawney on May 27, 2008

Which would be amazing, considering Auschwitz was liberated by the Red Army on Jan 27, 1945. Was Obama’s “uncle” a Russian soldier?

…Obama also spoke about his uncle, who was part of the American brigade that helped to liberate Auschwitz…

There’s speculation that since CBS never directly quoted him on that, perhaps the reporter only paraphrased Auschwitz in. Unlikely, considering the Washington Post also reported him speaking about the prison camp.

Meanwhile, who is this “uncle” of Obama’s? His mother was an only child, and his father’s family was/is in Kenya. Is that just a name he gives to a family friend or his he referring to some great-uncle?

Update: Via Allah, where was this “uncle” in a 2002 speech recalling his family’s sacrifices during WWII?

My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton’s army. He saw the dead and dying across the fields of Europe; he heard the stories of fellow troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka. He fought in the name of a larger freedom, part of that arsenal of democracy that triumphed over evil, and he did not fight in vain.

Wouldn’t this have been an opportune time to bring up the “uncle” who liberated perhaps the most infamous Nazi prison camp?
