Quite a lovely sentiment, especially considering how many times his much-beloved nutroots have gone after the family members of Republican politicians. John Roberts’ kids? Bush’s girls? Rick Santorum’s children who were upset their dad lost? Those are apparently all fair game.
But a fully-grown, Ivy League-educated woman who hasn’t been proud of her country in her adult life? You’re all going to Hell!
DICK DURBIN: Well, I know Michelle, she’s been my friend, a friend of my wife, for many, many years. She can take it. She can handle herself. She’s a very accomplished person. But I will tell you this: the hottest ring in hell is reserved for those in politics who attack their opponents’ families. And if there are some Republican strategists who think that’t the way to win the election, I think they’re wrong.
Unlike Roberts’ kid and Santorum’s children, Michelle Obama has fully-inserted herself into this race. She made the “proud” remark at a large rally for her husband. She’s been on TV going after the opposition and has spoken on his behalf many a time. Yet she’s apparently off-limits.
