And so the inevitably tack to the center continues, following stops in FISAville, NAFTAburg, and Death Penalty City. Unlike many in the Congressional leadership and a chunk of his supporters (at least in terms of the internet), Barack Obama’s spokesman says the Illionois Senator opposes the Fairness Doctrine.
There may be some Democrats talking about reimposing the fairness doctrine, but one very important one does not: presumptive presidential nominee Barack Obama…
“Senator Obama does not support re-imposing the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters,” said press secretary Michael Ortiz in an e-mail to B&C late Wednesday.
“He considers this debate to be a distraction from the conversation we should be having about opening up the airwaves and modern communications to as many diverse viewpoints as possible,” said Ortiz.
“[T]hat is why Senator Obama supports media ownership caps, network neutrality, public broadcasting, as well as increasing minority ownership of broadcasting and print outlets.”
Pardon my speculation, but I don’t believe him. This is the same campaign that rallied against NAFTA during the primary, only for Obama to say his rhetoric was overheated and NAFTA isn’t all bad. This is the same campaign currently getting blasted by even the NYT for saying he’d negotiate with McCain and supported the public financing system, only to opt-out when he started raking in the dough.
