Will Obama Join The Senate FISA Blockade?

by Stephan Tawney on June 25, 2008

After having promised not to filibuster the FISA compromise in the Senate, Russ Feingold and Chris Dodd vowed to attempt to block an end to debate in that chamber.

This is a deeply flawed bill, which does nothing more than offer retroactive immunity by another name. We strongly urge our colleagues to reject this so-called ‘compromise’ legislation and oppose any efforts to consider this bill in its current form. We will oppose efforts to end debate on this bill as long as it provides retroactive immunity for the telecommunications companies that may have participated in the President’s warrantless wiretapping program, and as long as it fails to protect the privacy of law-abiding Americans.

Regardless of what actions Feingold take, the bill will pass the Senate. But as Ed Morrissey notes, it places new pressure on Barack Obama over what to do now. Surely his sold supporters on the far left want him to join with Feingold in blocking an end to the debate, but that would negate the entire purpose of why he decided to support the compromise in the first place.

So what will Obama do?

I’m with Ed:

Expect a Profiles in Courage moment when the votes come up for the FISA bill — and expect to see Obama campaigning in some town hundreds of miles from DC.
