Yahoo Recaptioned AFP Photo

by Stephan Tawney on July 16, 2008

As it turns out, AFP was not responsible for yesterday’s false captioning of two troops standing by a Humvee. In fact, the news bureau correctly labeled their location as Romania — not Iraq — and their activity as training — not securing — in at least two different locations.

So it would appear that Yahoo entirely recaptioned the photo, moving the location of the soldiers to a new country, claiming they were engaging in a different activity, and adding in the bit about the bombing of Iraqi army recruits.

Bob Owens appears to believe that the last bit is the reason for the change: Associating it with the events that occurred 1,500 miles away. I tend to agree.
