Ayman al-Zawahiri, the second-in-command of Al Qaeda, is potentially critically wounded or dead, according to a Taliban memo intercepted by sources for CBS News. This is actually the second report, from two different credible sources, of Zawahiri’s death in the past 24 hours.
CBS News has obtained a copy of an intercepted letter from sources in Pakistan, which urgently requests a doctor to treat Zawahiri. He’s believed to be somewhere in Pakistan’s remote tribal areas of Pakistan…
It is reportedly written by local Taliban leader, Baitullah Mehsud, whose signature and seal are visible on the letter.
The Taliban logo and the Mehsud’s seal have been confirmed by experts as legitimate.
However, CBS News has not been able to confirm the authenticity of Baitullah Mehsud’s signature and seal.
The letter is dated July 29 - one day after a U.S. air strike that killed al Qaeda weapons expert Abu Khabab al-Masri, and five other Arabs in South Waziristan.
As Allahpundit points out, fake memos aren’t exactly unheard of in regards to the wounding/deaths of big fish targets. However, Stratfor is hearing the same information from its own Pakistani sources and The Jawa Report was told last week that the hunt was on for a big fish in Pakistan.
Basically all we can do now is wait and see. Until there’s confirmation of a kill from U.S. Forces, we should continue to assume that the dirtbag is still wasting oxygen.
