A Reminder for Chris Matthews

It’s February 19, 2008 immediately after a primary. State Senator Kirk Watson (D-TX) is on MSNBC’s Hardball, talking about his support for Barack Obama. Host Chris Matthews begins tearing into him, asking Watson to name some of Obama’s legislative accomplishments. When the state senator attempts to avoid the subject, Matthews demands that he answer the question since he’s “supported him for president”. Watson is unable to.

Matthews knew full well that Watson couldn’t name even one accomplishment by Obama, so he attempted to use this as a gotcha moment. After all, it wasn’t the first time commentators had asked Obama supporters an important question about the Illinois senator, only to have them unable to answer. What kind of accomplishments could he possibly have if even his staunchest supporters can’t name one? Isn’t that a problem, our host asks. Perhaps Matthews should remember this the next time he shills for Obama.
