Barack Obama Low Fat Content A Drawback?

by Douglas Gibbs on August 3, 2008

The Wall Street Journal published possibly the stupidest article about Barack Obama so far.

The article was probably conceived when Obama said in San Diego last month, “Listen, I’m skinny but I’m tough.”

The Journal’s concern, apparently, is that in a nation in which 66% of the voting-age population is overweight and 32% is obese, Obama’s skinniness may actually be a liability.

Don’t get me wrong. I can’t stand Obama, and I think he is very dangerous for our nation – but since when should body-fat percentage be a litmus test?

I suppose high metabolisms are a bad thing in the eyes of the WSJ . . . after all, Obama visits waffle houses, ice-cream parlors and greasy-spoon diners around the country, yet maintains this slim physique that may make the voters think Obama is nothing like them after all.

He has already been criticized by opponents for appearing elitist or out of touch with average Americans. Surely, he must find something he has in common with the average American.

Well, I for one think it is silly that the issue even came up, and the only reason I am writing about it is to perhaps figure out why a publication would actually put out such a piece.

I really don’t care if he’s a beanpole, and my vote has nothing to do with his weight.

But perhaps I should not be surprised that the “body-fat card” has been pulled against him by a publication. It is just funny that it is a completely different “card” being pulled than Obama has been claiming will be used against him.
