I touched on this in the last post, but I didn’t want it to disappear into the black hole (is that racist now?). In his latest ad, Barack Obama accuses John McCain of being in the pocket of big oil because he’s received $2 million from the industry. Obama’s being dishonest in his ad, however.
From what he says, Obama would have you believe that McCain accepts contributions from oil companies. In fact, he’s touted the fact that he doesn’t. But no one is allowed to receive money directly from corporations. They can, however, accept contributions from employees of the industry. As Factcheck.org found out, Obama’s hands are hardly clean:
Obama has accepted more than $213,000 from individuals who work for companies in the oil and gas industry and their spouses.
Two of Obama’s bundlers are top executives at oil companies and are listed on his Web site as raising between $50,000 and $100,000 for the presidential hopeful.
If accepting contributions from the oil industry places you in the pocket of big oil, is Obama not sitting next to McCain in the same pocket? Of course. But don’t expect the media to pick up on this anytime soon.
