Obama Picks Bayh?; Hoax

by Stephan Tawney on August 18, 2008

According to a screenshot of a (supposed) CNN story that has now been pulled offline, Barack Obama has chosen Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) as his running mate. While there appears to be spelling errors in the screenshot of the supposed article, Matthew Kilburn notes that errors (especially in rush or draft stories) in nothing new. Heck, Fox News continues to show Obama has having spoken at the 1904 Democratic convention.

While I won’t yet personally vouch for the credibility of the screenshot, I see no real reason to doubt its authenticity. The URL is in a standard CNN format and page elements are matches for other stories. Furthermore, ObamaBayh08.com was recently reported to be pointing to the Democratic Party’s official website.

The “story” claims that the name was revealed by mistake, accidentally sent out by an aide who clicked “send” instead of “save”. The choice is supposed to be revealed to supporters via text message and email first.

Update: My main concern is the spelling errors; I count four. Granted, I end up making more than that in an average post and if this was a draft meant to be published tomorrow, it may not have been proof-read yet. Basically, we have to play “Wait and See”.

Update: I’m more and more convinced that this is a hoax. If you look at the screenshot, the title on the tab is different from the title of the alleged CNN story. The story that actually bears the title in the tab (here) has the same exact “Story Highlights” as the likely-photoshopped screenshot. I’m going with “hoax”.
