Russia Steals U.S. Military Equipment, Takes Georgian Prisoners
by Stephan Tawney
Russian troops stole American humvees on the way back to the States and took Georgian prisoners from the port of Poti today.
A Georgian defense spokeswoman said eight servicemen detained while trying to guard the port were among those held.
Also in Poti, Russian soldiers commandeered four Humvees that had been used in U.S.-Georgian military exercises and were destined to be shipped back to the United States.
The Pentagon said it was looking into the theft. Georgian Deputy Defense Minister Batu Kutelia said Russian forces seized the vehicles.
The Russians also blocked access to the naval and commercial ports and pulled a sophisticated missile boat out of view of observers before blowing it up. Russia still insists, however, that it’s keeping its word to withdraw from undisputed Georgian territory.
Meanwhile, NATO allies met to demand Russian withdrawel and agreed to suspend official relations with the country until further notice. Russia’s ambassador to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, dismissed the meeting as a “mountain (giving) birth to a mouse”.
