FBI Begins Investigating Mahoney

by Stephan Tawney on October 14, 2008

The FBI has begun an investigation into Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-FL) after ABC broke news that the West Palm Beach Congressman hired his mistress onto his official staff and then paid her off to keep her quiet. According to ABC News, agents have begun contacting members of Mahoney’s staff in pursuit of the legal documents surrounding the settlement.

Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi is calling for an “immediate and thorough” investigation into Mahoney’s activities. I’m sure it’ll be just as unbiased and speedy as we expect. Which is to say not at all.

Mahoney still hasn’t denied having the affair. He’s also not taking questions from reporters.

Questions About His Residency

This isn’t the first time Mahoney has found himself (and his campaign) embroiled in controversy. Roll Call, the renowned Capitol Hill newspaper, found the Congressman to be registered to vote at a horse barn in his district in order to meet the minimal residency requirements to represent it.

Soviet Union Veteran Controversy

In a mailer sent out by Mahoney’s campaign back in June, the picture seen here appeared. The flier was meant to tout the Democrat’s support for veterans issues and read, “Honoring Those Who Defend Our Freedom”. The only problem? The man in the picture is actually a veteran of the Soviet Union’s Red Army, with the hammer and sickle logo clearly visible on one of his medals. To no one’s surprise, he took some flack for that.

Opposition

Incidentally, Mahoney does have a viable (even more so now) challenger for his seat in the red Florida 16 district. His name is Tom Rooney and his website is here. He might appreciate some support if you can help out.

The interesting thing about Mahoney living in a barn–other than him living in a barn is that he said the discrepency between Homestead and voting residency is because he and his wife want to build there “dream home” next to the barn. Another lie to the voters that gives Mahoney extra tax breaks as well, which is a crime in Florida.
