Thousands of Fraudulent ACORN Registrations Found in Philadelphia

by Stephan Tawney on October 15, 2008

Drew Griffin files another excellent report for CNN. The tactics used to fraudulently fill out applications never ceases to surprise me. The Deputy City Commissioner of Philadelphia says that some filled them out by going through a phone book and copying the names down verbatum, apostrophe and all. ACORN seemingly has no hiring standards and admits it doesn’t vet its workers for criminal records. An ex-ACORN worker, a convicted felon, is being charged with multiple counts of forgery in relation to the GOTV drive in Michigan.

What does ACORN say in all of this? As you’ll see in the video, its staffers are busy convincing volunteers that the reports are just attacks by the right wing and media (yes, really) on poor people. “That is fraud! That is voter suppression,” the ACORN speaker claims. Yes, of course. It’s always a matter of the man trying to suppress people. Nevermind the fact that many thousands of petitions are, in fact, illegitimate.

Both CNN and Griffin, as Ed says, deserve kudos for covering this story. It’s nice to see a little accountability of the other side more often.
