Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-FL), currently attempting to keep his seat in the conservative Florida 16 district, has explicitly admitted to having multiple affairs within the past two years. Despite calling his behavior “disgraceful” and “unacceptable”, Mahoney insists that he will not bow out of the race he now seems poised to lose.
“Let me just be explicit that I am admitting to it…to having affairs,” Mahoney said in an interview this afternoon with reporter Terri Parker at WPBF News 25, ABC News’ affiliate in West Palm Beach…
In the approximately 20-minute long interview, Mahoney did not say exactly how many other women he had affairs with. “I don’t know what other women are going to come out,” he said…
But he discussed two specifically. He said the affair with Allen began during his 2006 campaign and had gone on intermittently until 2008.
He said his relationship with Allen — a former campaign worker and one-time employee in his federal office “was totally inappropriate.”
What did Congressional Democratic leaders know and when did they know it? According to Mahoney himself, Rep. Rahm Emmanuel (D-Ill.), chair of the Democratic Caucus, confronted him about an affair in 2007. He told Mahoney that if it was happening that it had to stop. The Florida Democrat did not heed the warning. He admits that he simply wanted to hide it all from his constituents.
Still, he insists that he broke no laws. The FBI is investigating.
Mahoney’s opponent is conservative Tom Rooney, a veteran and Florida native. Real Clear Politics now has Florida 16 “leaning GOP” and says that Mahoney’s chances of winnning re-election are slim.
