Russell Within Striking Distance of Murtha

by Stephan Tawney on Thu, Oct 23, 2008

Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), who notoriously accused now-acquitted U.S. Marines in Haditha of cold-blooded murder, is now seeing his grip on his seat in Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District slipping. Murtha leads Lt. Col. William Russell (ret) by just four points — within the margin of error. This is the closest he’s come to losing his seat in years.

What could be causing this? General dissatisfaction with Murtha’s performance in Congress? Or the fact that he called his constituents “racist”, only to clarify that he really meant to call them “rednecks”? Yeah, the last one might have a little something to do with it.

Here’s a promising sign for Russell:

About 54 percent of voters among those polled say it’s time for someone else to represent them in Congress. About 35 percent say Murtha deserves to be re-elected.

Analysts weren’t actually paying much attention to this race. Why? Murtha hasn’t had a significant challenge in years. His 2006 opponent lost by more that 20 points and he ran unopposed in 2004. Russell poses a significant threat to the liberal Democrat’s political future.

If you’d like to help out Lt. Col. Russell, here’s his website. It sounds to me like Pennsylvania 12 is ready for a change in leadership. Russell sounds like the guy to bring that about.

Via Hot Air Headlines.

Update: Allah now has a post on it. He mentions something that I neglected to: While Russell has outraised Murtha by several hundred thousand dollars, he has less cash-on-hand. With just 11 days until election, he could use cash now. If you can, throw in something at his website.
