Biden Misleads Voters About SOFA Talks

by Stephan Tawney on October 24, 2008

Quite an awkward moment on CNN this morning as Alina Cho was supposedly fact-checking it. She attempted to say that Joe Biden was right in his claim that the Bush Administration was coming around and now agrees with Barack Obama’s position on withdrawal. Here’s the clip:

Cho is surprised at the verdict; She shouldn’t be. The withdrawals under the SOFA agreement aren’t tied to dates, as Obama wanted, but security improvements. That’s consistent with the Bush Administration’s position of not leaving an area until it can sustain itself.

Second of all, as Ed Morrissey once said, there’s a difference between withdrawing from Europe in 1944 and withdrawing in 1946. There’s a difference between establishing a withdrawal schedule in January 2007 and October 2008. The latter is due to massive improvements and the Iraqi government being able to handle the security situation itself. The former was due to violence and a tough fight. Withdrawing after you’ve won a fight isn’t the same as withdrawing before the fight is over.
