John Leonard, the liberal critic who began his career (ironically) at National Review, has died at the age of 69. He is survived by his wife, two children, a stepchild, and three grandchildren.
Despite being what even the New York Times describes as an acerbic leftist, Leonard found early support in William F. Buckley — the founder of National Review and the modern American conservative movement. Buckley actually gave Leonard his very first job in the field of journalism.
I disgagreed with most of what Leonard believed, but he was a man you could respect regardless of your political affiliation. He will certainly be missed.
