Lugar for Secretary of State?

by Stephan Tawney on November 10, 2008

Has Senator Dick Lugar (R-Ind) been offered the role of Secretary of State in the Obama Administration? A Capitol Hill staffer claims as much on The Capitolist, an anonymous message forum specifically for the staffers.

Obama has asked Dick Lugar to serve as SoS and he has agreed.

Is there any possibility that this is true? Yes, actually. He became critical of the Bush Administration’s handling of the war in Iraq back in June 2007, and he currently serves as the ranking member on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

There has actually been talk of him taking such a role since Obama’s victory, though Lugar insisted that he would turn it down.

Washington – Still being talked about for secretary of state, Indiana Senator Dick Lugar continues to say “no thanks” and would tell Barack Obama that if he calls. Lugar talked about that and his take on the election in an Eyewitness News interview Thursday.

At the capitol, Sen. Dick Lugar joined in urging that world hunger be a priority for Barack Obama’s new administration, but he insists he has no desire to shape foreign policy in an Obama cabinet.

“I feel that I can do the most for my state for my country by serving in the United States Senate,” said Indiana’s senior senator.

Of course, Biden insisted that he wasn’t Obama’s choice for Veep, too. Lugar’s denial wasn’t exactly Shermanesque and he could easily reverse himself.

One Response to “Lugar for Secretary of State?”

  1. CalifGirlInMaine Says:

Is Obama looking at any DEMOCRATIC senators for Cabinet positions? Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, Republican senators from Maine, were mentioned as possible candidates for the Cabinet. Now, Dick Lugar, a Republican senator from Ind.

Maine has a Democratic governor; if Snowe and/or Collins accepted Obama’s appointments, there would be undoubtedly be one or two more Democratic senators. Bipartisanship as well as increase the Demo. Senate majority — win-win for Obama, lose bigger for the rest of us.

Indiana has a Republican governor, so Lugar’s acceptance would presumably not affect the Demo/Repub balance in the senate.
