Not exactly breaking news, but it’ll be interesting to see who’s appointed to replace him. The new junior Senator from Illinois will only serve until 2010, when Obama would’ve been up for re-election if he hadn’t won.
Potential candidates to replace Obama include Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Illinois Senate President Emil Jones and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.
On Tuesday, Obama appeared with another potential replacement, Iraq war veteran Tammy Duckworth, to commemorate Veterans Day. She is a former congressional candidate and head of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
The likelihood of anyone not a liberal getting the job? Slim-to-none. Bill Jempty of Wizbang expresses some hope for Tammy Duckworth, who would likely have been a Blue Dog Democrat had she won her race in Illinois’ 7th district. We’ll see.
