Update: I’ve opened a new thread here.

Update (3:08PM ET): Alright, I’m hearing from Indian bloggers that a boat full of explosives has been found near the Gateway to India. Here’s a picture of reportedly one of the terrorists. Anti-terror chief Hemant Karkare has been killed. The U.S. embassy reports no American deaths so far, but that’s not much of a consolation.

***

Update (2:56PM ET): Foreigners reportedly taken hostage, with one Indian blogger apparently hearing that figure is in the hundreds. A police station also reportedly attacked.

***

Update (2:37PM ET): Fox News reports shooting at the Marriott Hotel in Mumbai, too. Some links: Live video from India in English and popular blogs in India.

***

Update (2:24PM ET): Mumbai police believe that the terrorists are holding hostages and are trying to move to the local hospital. There’s a shoot-out going on now between the commandos and attackers.

***

Update (2:10PM ET): The gunmen are reportedly still in the hotel and fighting the police (update: Mumbai police chief confirms). In the initial attack they were asking where the “British and Americans” were. 25 confirmed dead so far.

Fox says that at least 25 people are dead and many dozens injured. The gunmen were apparenty targeting westerners. Here’s the initial report from India:

Terror struck the country’s financial capital late on Wednesday night as coordinate serial explosions and indiscriminate firing rocked eight areas across Mumbai including the crowded CST railway station, two five star hotels–Oberoi and Taj– leaving 16 persons dead and 50 injured. ( Watch )

Armed with AK-47 rifles and grenades, a couple of terrorists entered the passenger hall of CST and opened fire and threw grenades, Mumbai General Railway Police Commissioner A K Sharma said.

The terror strike which began at 10:33 PM at Chhatrapathi Shivaji Terminus(CST), formerly known as the Victoria Terminus(VT), claimed 10 lives in the premises of the station alone, police said.

Three persons were killed in a bomb explosion in a taxi on Mazegaon dockyard road and an equal number were gunned down at Taj Hotel. The victims in the hotel were its employees.

The lobby of the Oberoi hotel was on fire and the hotel evacuated, eyewitnesses said.

Maharashtra DGP A N Roy said tonight’s attack in “at least seven places” is a “terror strike.”

An Indian freelance reporter is hearing as many as 80 killed thus far, but I can’t find official reports to confirm that. Updates to come.
