David Spade Donates $100,000 to Help Phoenix Cops

by Stephan Tawney on December 23, 2008

When police officers in Arizona needed some help to purchase AR-15 rifles for protection, actor and native David Spade stepped up to the plate. Spade has donated $100,000 to the Phoenix police department, which will purchase about 50 of the rifles for its patrol officers.

LOS ANGELES – The Phoenix Police Department has gotten some high-powered goodies courtesy of actor David Spade.

The one-time Phoenix resident donated $100,000 so that the department can buy approximately 50 AR-15 rifles.

Spade said he wanted to make the donation after seeing a TV news report about Phoenix officers having to buy their own rifles. Spade grew up in the Phoenix area and graduated from Arizona State University.

The streets had apparently gotten dangerous enough thanks to Mexican cartels that officers were forgoing family vacations and other luxuries to buy the guns out of their own pockets.

A very, very nice gesture by Spade, who has previously donated $25,000 to the family of a slain officer and thousands more to an Arizonan Humane Society.

That’s all well and good but the AR-15 is decidedly not a ‘high-powered’ rifle. Its .223 round is not sufficiently powerful to be legal for deer hunting in most states.

I would have just donated the money to the NRA, but still that is a nice story to hear about a Hollywood star.
