The Ever-Classless Kathy Griffin on Hecklers

by Stephan Tawney on January 2, 2009

Yes, I know that I’m terribly late to this story but consider this: It only hit the Drudge Report and New York Post today. So it’s still ripe enough to make a post out of. So there.

Comedienne Kathy Griffin may be doomed to life on CNN’s S-list after answering a heckler with a shrieking, vulgar tirade during the network’s live New Year’s Eve broadcast.

“Screw you,” she told the heckler. “Why don’t you get a job, buddy? You know what? I don’t go to your job and knock the d- – - out of your mouth.”

You can catch the video of that lovely exchange here. Obviously it’s not safe for work. But while there has been much attention paid to that particular vulgar statement, it wasn’t Griffin’s only gem:

Cooper seemed to become increasingly uncomfortable with Griffin’s off-color remarks, including her request to “get a pap smear from [CNN medical reporter] Dr. Sanjay Gupta,” and her description of former CNN host Glenn Beck as a “heroin addict Mormon.”

But wishing viewers a Happy “Blue” Year seems to have been exactly why Griffin, star of the Bravo reality-TV show “My Life on the D-List,” was tapped for the show for the second year running.

CNN managed to cut the “screw you” exchange out of the rebroadcast for the west coast, but those of us on the east coast certainly heard it loud and clear. Requests for comment were not returned by a CNN spokesperson.

This really shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. Griffin is and has been utterly classless. Her acceptance speech when she won an Emmy included the following:

Now, a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. He didn’t help me a bit. If it was up to him, Cesar Milan would be up here with that damn dog. So all I can say is suck it, Jesus, this award is my god now!

She considers herself on the D-list. It’s a position of which she’s worthy. Knowing her history, CNN should never have invited her to co-host its New Year’s Eve coverage.
