Report: Gaza Residents Saw Militants Firing Mortars From Area Near UN School

by Stephan Tawney on January 6, 2009

The Associated Press reports that it’s spoken with two Gazans who witnessed militants attacking Israeli forces from a street near the UN school that was hit today.

Israel’s military said its shelling — the deadliest single episode since Israeli ground forces invaded Gaza Saturday — was a response to mortar fire from within the school and said Hamas militants were using civilians as cover.

Two residents of the area who spoke by telephone said they saw a small group of militants firing mortar rounds from a street near the school, where 350 people had gathered to get away from the shelling. They spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal…

U.N. officials demanded an investigation of the shelling.

And I demand an investigation into the fact that the headmaster of one of the UN’s schools was busy making explosives for jihadis at night. Or the fact that Hamas members were reported to be disguising themselves as doctors and nurses in hospitals to hide. The United Nations’ selective outrage continues.

Meanwhile, Allahpundit points out that the media’s narrative has shifted. Now, with knowledge that the school or area around it was used to launch attacks, the talking points have shifted to proportionality.

Oh, and The Guardian, the same paper that was busy giving a respectful obituary for a murderous Hamas leader, is warning that the replacement for Hamas will be worse. Nevermind the fact that Fatah, hardly worse than Hamas, is poised to come back to power if the terrorist organization is kicked out.

Addendum: Forgot to add that the United Nations’ leadership is absolutely outraged over the shelling of the school by Israel. The fact that jihadis are using the UN’s schools to launch attacks on Israeli forces? Er, not so much.
