Cornyn Blocks Vote on Hillary

He cites nonspecific ethics issues, supposedly a reference to the play-for-play allegations surrounding the donations to her husband’s foundation.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s smooth ride to confirmation as secretary of state hit a small bump on Tuesday as one of her Republican colleagues blocked a vote on Mrs. Clinton’s nomination, citing ethical questions arising from donors to her husband’s charitable foundation.

Senator John Cornyn of Texas objected to including Mrs. Clinton’s name in a unanimous consent vote for several Cabinet nominees, scheduled for hours after the swearing-in of President-elect Barack Obama. The Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, plans to hold a roll-call vote on Mrs. Clinton’s nomination on Wednesday, which she is expected to win easily. …

Mrs. Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, signed an agreement with the Obama transition team, putting some limits on foreign donations to his foundation, as well as stipulating annual disclosure of new donors.

But Senator Cornyn, in a letter to Mrs. Clinton last Friday, said he remained worried that her diplomatic activities would be compromised “unless tighter foreign fund-raising restrictions and transparency protocols are adopted.”

Eh. If there’s anyone the GOP should be spending time trying to stop, Hillary Clinton isn’t it. Let’s say Cornyn succeeds in blocking Clinton’s appointing, as unlikely as that may be. Who are we going to get after her that’ll be better? Don’t expect a more conservative choice than the special lady who doesn’t want to negotiate unconditionally with nations like Iran and Cuba. As Ed Morrissey says, we have more to fear from a pick of John Kerry to replace her.

  1. Vivi Aviv Says:

Senator Cornyn is also aware of another problem with the Hillary nomination: Article 1, Section 6 of the Constitution; it says no senator shall during the time for which he was elected be appointed to any civil office under the authority of the US (like Secretary of State) which the salary of such post have been increased during his continuance in office. (I simplified it for your and your readers’ benefit.

Bush increased the SOS salary during Hillary’s service as a senator, a seat which she didn’t give up until Obama nominated her. Unless the Saxbe Fix was applied.

Cornyn probably took the easier road of foreign donations vs. ignoring Article 1 Section 6 of the Constitution by Obama and our elected officials.
