Obama to Authorize U.S. Aid Money to Fund Abortions

by Stephan Tawney on January 23, 2009

Paging Doug Kmiec, paging Doug Kmiec. The man you, a strong pro-lifer, endorsed will sign an executive order allowing federal aid funds to go to groups that promote or perform abortions. We’re talking about the repealing of the Mexico City policy, of course.

President Barack Obama will sign an executive order later Friday ending the ban on federal funds for international groups that promote or perform abortion, officials said.

It is a move certain to please liberals and other abortion-rights advocates, and the reversal was expected in the Democrat’s first week as president.

The so-called “Mexico City policy” has been reinstated and then reversed by Republican and Democratic presidents since Repulican President Ronald Reagan established it in 1984. President Bill Clinton then ended the ban, but President George W. Bush re-instituted it in 2001 as one of his first acts in office.

First of all, please note the timing. He’ll sign it “later Friday”. In other words, he’ll sign it away from the limelight when networks are working on their evening broadcasts and people are thinking about the weekend. Like Ed Morrissey says, it’s not called the graveyard of news cycles for nothing.

Second, this should pretty much dispel any misconceptions that pro-lifers that voted for The One had about him. Believe it or not, there were social conservatives who believed that he’d be more pro-life than the alternative and would govern from the center-right on this issue. Now he’s signing an executive order allowing taxpayer funds to aid international organizations that perform abortions. This should confirm in all people’s minds that he’ll be nothing short of liberal on the question of abortion.

Of course, there should never have been any question as to where he stood. The man voted against a measure that would’ve required doctors to provide care for babies that’d already been born. Yet folks like Kmiec looked over that and concluded Obama would be just fine. Surprise, dumbasses!
