How Much Will the Stimulus Actually Cost?

by Stephan Tawney on February 12, 2009

We’ve been told by the media that the stimulus will cost Americans about $790 billion. But that’s not really the cost of the Pelosi-Reid-Obama Debt Act of 2009; it’s much, much greater. From the Heritage Foundation:

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) asked the Congressional Budget Office to estimate the impact of permanently extending the 20 most popular provisions of the stimulus bill. What did the CBO find? As you can see from the table below, the true 10 year cost of the stimulus bill $2.527 trillion in in spending with another $744 billion cost in debt servicing. Total bill for the Generational Theft Act: $3.27 Trillion.

$3.27 trillion. This from the same group of people who complained about the financial costs of fighting the war on terror.

So forget about the $790 billion price tag. It’s a bunch of bologna. We’re putting our future generations on the hook for over $3 trillion. In one piece of legislation that Vice President Biden admits has a good chance of failing. Hope. Change. More and more debt.
