Public Overwhelmingly Opposes Second Stimulus

by Stephan Tawney on March 11, 2009

Who would’ve thought that people seeing their 401(k)s diminish would oppose a second multi-billion dollar porkfest? Better question: Will Pelosi, Reid, and Obama actually care what the public thinks? The Generational Thiefs been claiming the public approved of this type of stimulating on November 4th. Now the public seems to disagree. Showdown!

Just 27% of voters nationwide favor passage of a second economic stimulus package. The latest Rasmussen Reports nationwide telephone survey found that 55% are opposed and 19% are not sure.

Despite the public opposition, 74% say it’s likely that Congress will try to pass another stimulus plan before the year is out. That figure includes 45% who say it’s Very Likely that Congress will do so…

Forty-three percent (43%) of Democrats favor a second stimulus package while 32% are opposed. Republicans oppose the concept by an 8-to-1 margin. Among those not affiliated with either major party, 59% are opposed to a second stimulus plan while 23% are in favor of it.

The claim will be that Rasmussen Reports is unreliable, of course. But Allahpundit points out that these results aren’t that unbelievable considering the findings of other recent polls. 61% told NBC and the Wall Street Journal that they’re concerned about the government spending too much. Newsweek was told by 52% that the original stimulus was the right amount or that we should never have passed on to begin with. Since then, the public has witnessed the Dow fall further, more talk of nationalizing institutions, and was forced to choke down a $410 billion omnibus stuffed with earmarks and drawing opposition even from some liberal Democrats.

Exit question: How long before we get another primetime speech by The One warning us that failure to pass another porkulus will lead us into a depression from which we’ll never emerge?
