I didn’t even know he was sick and now the New York Post reports that actor and political activist Ron Silver, the Tony Award-winning actor who made a rightward shift following the 9/11 attacks, has passed away. He had apparently been battling cancer. He was just 62.
Silver was a self-described lifelong liberal Democrat who spoke at the 1992 Democratic National Convention. He was even a founding member of the Creative Coalition, a left-leaning political advocacy group for the entertainment industry.
Then came the attacks of September 11th. Silver took a significant rightward shift politically, advocating for President Bush’s re-election at the Republican National Convention in 2004. A staunch defender of Israel, Silver co-founded the One Jerusalem organization, a group dedicated to preserving Jerusalem as one city. He would go on to become a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, write for Pajamas Media, host his own show on Sirius Satellite Radio, and be nominated by President Bush to the Board of Directors for the United States Institute of Peace.
All along the way he advocated for a strong national defense and the support of Israel. Even while being mocked by his more liberal colleagues, Silver stood strong and fought the good fight.
Ron, may you rest in peace. You will certainly be missed down here.
