The United States Geological Survey has confirmed an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has hit 53 miles outside of Rome, Italy. The quake was large enough to awaken a Reuters correspondent asleep in famous city. There are also reports of a tsunami warning having been issued.
Whether the shallow earthquake will be a problem depends greatly on the area’s infrastructure. Older buildings can easily crumble in a 6.3 rumble, which can cause serious injuries or loss of life. Prayers for everyone impacted.
Update: There are now reports that buildings have collapsed; fatalities are feared. Casualties are just about guaranteed.
Update X2: There are multiple fatalities reported. Electricity is out for thousands.
