North Korea Conducts Two Additional Missile Tests

by Stephan Tawney on May 25, 2009

North Korea conducted two additional short-range missile tests overnight, Yonhap news reports. That’s in addition to a short-range missile test this past weekend and, of course, the underground nuclear test that occurred late Sunday.

The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency session later today to determine how to respond to the latest actions by the DPRK. What to expect? Probably another watered-down wrist-slap that engages in “time to enforce the sanctions” and “this provocation by the DPRK must be condemned” rhetoric. Kim Jong-Il wins another round, in other words.

Interesting to note: The emergency meeting was called for by South Korea and Japan, yet Russia had to approve of it. Why? It currently holds the presidency of the Security Council, which changes hands every month.

Last month the position was held by Mexico, while Turkey will serve for the month of June. Uganda, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam will each get a turn for the remainder of the year. France, Japan, and Libyan Arab Jamahiriya were presidents for January, February, and March respectively.
